Most important tech advances #11: The assembly line

Before the invention of the assembly line, most products were crafted by a single individual. While this meant that each piece crafted was generally well made, it also meant that the production process could be very slow. After all, one person can only do so much at a time. However, one major invention came along that virtually changed the world and the way things were made, this was the assembly line.

Perhaps the best known person in regards to using an assembly line was Henry Ford. By using the assembly line he was able to not only produce a massive amount of motor vehicles, but also able to produce them for less money and sell them for prices that almost anyone could afford. It was not long after he revolutionized the assembly line that most major companies in America and Europe took advantage of this as well. In fact this change in how things were made led to a new era of prosperity the likes of which had never been seen before.

The assembly line is in high use today and is responsible for about everything you use in your home and office. Not only are goods such as automobiles made, but so are computers, heaters, and virtually everything else. In fact, the dominant place of assembly lines has led to a market for hand crafted goods, which is kind of funny when you think about it.

I have to be honest for a quick second. This list is getting harder and harder to do. As I enter into the final ten I find myself constantly wondering if I am making the right decision or if I have given the right thought to everything. However, I will continue and hope that you, oh gentle reader, will forgive me if I wind up being wrong.
