A Fatherhood Moment

I was walking down the hallway of my home this morning when I heard my youngest daughters voice. I peeked into her room and saw she was happily playing with some of her toys and making up a little story about them. As I watched, I couldn't believe how good it felt just to watch my child at play.

As I sat there, my daughter completely unaware of my presence I felt a tear come to my eye. It wasn't a tear of sadness, it was one of those rare tears of complete joy and thanks. Sometimes we parents feel as though we have given up almost everything in order to raise our children. We can't go out and party like we used too. We can't simply pack up and leave for another destination without any kind of planning. In short, a parents life can be a bit boring.

However, this morning, as I observed my daughter play I realized that the sacrifice has been worth every moment. I understand that the greatest thing I can possibly do on this planet is be a good father and raise my children to the best of my ability. Where some people might look at my life and not see it as amounting to anything major, I see that my children will be my life work. My children will be my Magus Opus, my great work.

I am glad I chose to be a parent and while sometimes I struggle with the day in and day out of it all, I will never regret my choice. Now I understand why so many people have given up so much to be parents. All you have to do is walk down the hallway and catch your child playing to know exactly what I am talking about.
